School profile
The school focuses on teaching foreign languages. In classes with extended language teaching /ELT/ pupils start with a foreign language (English) in the 1st year. The Second foreign language is German, French or Russian.
The important aspect of the school is teaching computer technology as a compulsory subject and its association with all other subjects. There is extended ICT teaching in some classes.
We pay great attention to the education of pupils with special educational needs (physical or social disabilities).
An integral part of education and training is to create conditions for the education of gifted pupils. The main idea of our SEP is to be open to all school children, parents, and the public.
Our aim is to keep the school full and recruit pupils from around Nový Jičín. The average class size is 24.
Our pupils are regularly awarded for excellent results in Scio testing and win leading positions in knowledge competitions organized by the Ministry of Education, or in sports competitions.
The school was built in 1886-1887 and began to serve for educational purposes in 1954/55. There were several school constructions works during its post-war history. The last major renovation, which gave the school its current form, took place in 1994.
The school management is in the main building. There are special classrooms (with interactive whiteboards and data projectors) and cabinets with collections (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography and Mathematics), a computer technology and multimedia classroom. Some classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards and data projectors. There is computer and internet access in almost every classroom. In the main building there is a school gym. In 2013, within the framework of ROP, the ground floor was renovated - refurbished with a newly equipped sports hall, a training kitchen, Physics and a Geography classroom
In the late 1980's, a new extension was built. The primary school is located there now. Some ordinary classrooms are equipped with interactive projectors; almost all classrooms are equipped with computers with Internet access. On the first floor of the building a re-education classroom was set up for pupils who need assisted teaching and for teachers with special education. This classroom is equipped with computers, an interactive whiteboard and other necessary teaching aids. There is also a computer training room for primary and lower-secondary pupils. In the extension there is a school canteen, which was reconstructed in the school year 2010/2011.
The centre for afternoon activities is located in a separate building with a garden in Jiráskova Street.
Since the school year 2015/2016 we have been teaching according to the principles of Montessori pedagogy. The key concepts in Montessori pedagogy are partnership approach, mutual respect and appreciation. A respectful approach allows children to develop high self-esteem. The path to the appropriate child behaviour involves participation in making rules of coexistence both in classroom and school itself.
To improve the material conditions for teaching, our school is involved in projects co-financed by the European Social Fund (see EU projects).
